Our computer was running Windows ME, but we were getting major internet errors. It was recommended that we upgrade to XP, which we did. My husband inadvertently went online before he realized that we did not have our virus scan upgraded to XP. Apparently, he visited a few sites that were LOADED with spyware and adware. We ran the virus program (McAfee 7) and it found TONS of possibly unwanted programs. We deleted them off and downloaded Spybot and Adaware, which found even more (Adaware found over 400 adware programs on our system). We deleted all files found by both programs

However, now our computer is running excessively slow. It took me 45 minutes to get to a website yesterday morning. It is taking up to one minute to load each page. It's so slow I could not even send a repair order through this site because it kept timing me out, so I had to do it from work today. I ran both adware programs again yesterday...five more were found by Adaware and 25 more were found by McAfee. None were found by Spybot. When I attempt to immunize the system, Spybot says "All known adware already blocked" or something like that

There is definitely something slowing the computer down terribly. We have 128K memory. Should we upgrade the memory? My husband is definitely getting tired of buying stuff to make this computer work!

Sounds to me like you are casting about in the dark. First off you should always look to system maintenance for a start. Defrag\chkdsk\disk cleaner are a good start. I would bet that your system has an excessive fragmentation level. over %10 and you begin degrading exponentially. An excellent free program to help optimize XP for performance is SpeedXP. I do not recommend using the "clear pagefile on shutdown" option. Everything else works well and it's free. After that you can do around 50-100 registry tweaks to optimize XP. This takes time and learning and some knowledge of your configuration. Make sure all drivers are up to date as well as all software patches installed. Turn off all autoupdate and do it manually. Turn off all the eye candy. Turn off indexing. Turn off the useless system restore and the list goes on and on. e:mail me if you need more. Good luck.

Hi Kwenbee,

The minimum RAM to run WinXP comfortably is 256MB. I have 512MB of RAM, and that works well. I have ordered 2 1GB RAM SoDIMMS,
and will turn the pagefile off for real performance.
