Major problem upgrading from Home to Pro

In the middle of upgrading a XP Home to Professional, and am at the point
where it is installing devices. It gets about 3/4 of the way through, then
a blue screen with white lettering flashes for just an instant and the pc
reboots and then automatically continues with the upgrade, comes to the same
point again, and reboots again. This endless cycle is frustrating, as I
cannot break out of it and kill the upgrade.
I've tried so many things that now I'm at the point where whether I boot
with the cd or not I eventually get just a black screen with a arrow pointer,
and that's it.
I look at the hard drive activity light, and it just faintly flickers in a
steady heartbeat pattern.
I am at a loss right now, and have decided to install Windows 2000, to just
get some kind of OS going and go from there.
What should I be doing to fix this problem???

Hi

Did you have any problems when using XP Home? Normally there shouldn't be
any trouble upgrading from Home to Pro. Did you run check disk, an AV scan,
defrag & a spyware sweep before upgrading? If so, did you find any
anomalies?
