Hello,

I ran Norton Anti-Virus today to do a virus check. After if it was
completed (and no viruses were found), IE6 will not work properly. I get a
Page Not Found Error, and this occurs for all web pages. I've got SP2
installed along with all the regular updates that are recommended by the
Windows Service Center alerts. My connection is definately running, so I
know that's not the problem. I also ran the sfc /scannow program to make
sure all dll files were restored. Can anyone help?

Hi HipsterDoofus :-)

Not sure what may have caused this, but, you may have a damaged Winsocket.
Try the following and see if it helps:

Download, install and run WINSOCKXPFIX, available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
also ....
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command
netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

Hope this helps :-)

Hi Jan,

Thank you for responding - I will try this out right away and repost. I'm
getting pretty desperate now... Also, I forgot to mention originally that
when Norton was finished running and I was closing the propgram, a message
popped up from the SP2 "Alert Center". It mentioned something about whether
to trust the Norton program or something along those lines. Is it possible
that my response to this alert would be causing the problem?

Hi HipsterDoofus :-)

It would help if you could post the whole Alert message, word for word, as
sometime messages are similar except for numbers or error codes.

Hi Jan,

I tried out the WINSOCKXPFIX, but it didn't help. Right now I am running
Norton again to try to get the message to pop up again. Also, I can briefly
see an error message in IE6 in the grey bar above the Start button. It is
only displayed briefly, then switches to "Done". I tried Printscreening it,
but it always copies as saying "Done". Do you know of any way I view the
error message?

Thanks, and I'll repost about Norton later

No...I'm sorry.I don't know of a way to trap the error message, and I don't
know anything about Norton products, as I never use them. Perhaps someone
else here might be able to help with that.

Instead of trying to print it try to doubleclick there. That could open up a window
which shows you more detailed error messages.

Also, if it is a script error you could activate the debugging options in the Advanced tab.
Even if you don't have a script debugger it will stop to show you the same dialog window.
For example,
uncheck Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer)
uncheck Disable Script Debugging (Other)
check Display a notification about every script error

Another thing that could help preserve the contents of the Status bar
to give you time to read it would be to use prompts from Security options
settings. Maximize your window to maximize the size of the Status bar.

Extract from another reply earlier this week.

Tip: the simplest way I have found to make this change is to doubleclick on the
security zone icon in the Status bar (to open the Security dialog), press Alt-C
(to get into the Security Settings dialog) and then repeatedly press P to scroll
to Prompt settings. Only when the preceding Enable setting is set (e.g. Green)
do I press Space to set the Prompt instead of the Enable. Then I can safely
reply Yes or No to any prompt I get without worrying if I might be allowing something
which might normally be disallowed by the default settings. ;)

You can also get prompts for new Cookies using the Privacy tab's
Advanced dialog. Simplest way to open the Privacy tab is to press Alt-V,v
to open the Privacy Report and then use its Settings... button.

Good luck
