Major IE Problem, more than a popup

Hello
I'm having some serious trouble with IE. Whenever I attempt to access a site, from google to sparknotes.com, I am unwantingly greeted with an advertisement about "Protecting" my computer. despite all my efforts, I cannot browse the internet. Please help
