I am thinking of moving from OE to Outlook.

What kind of maintenance is needed with Outlook? With OE, you need to
compact messages, etc. Is it the same with Outlook?

Also, are there any security, attachments, etc. settings that should be
changed?

Thanks and Happy New Year,

Cody

1) compacting is needed as well. Outlook stores everything in a single
pst-file though so that you don't have to repeat it for every folder.
2) attachment security is also embedded in Outlook. You might want to take a

So, how do you do it? How often should one do it?

I don't see anything on that list that I might receive as an attachment.

1) Rightclick on the Outlook Today folder-> Properties-> button
Advanced...-> button Compact Now. You should use this whenever you deleted
quite a lot from your mailbox
2) If there isn't anything on the list that you might receive you don't have
to do anything :-)

I would tend to disagree a little. While compaction can be done and may, at
times, help, Outlook also performs compaction on its own when "white space"
within the pst file exceeds 20% of the allocation, so proactive compaction
may not be needed in many cases.

True, but try doing this with a pst-file you used quite a lot (a lot of
deleting over time I mean) and then do a big clean up on the folder in one
day. Work with the pst-file another couple of weeks (to make sure white
space is reused and compacted as well) and check the file size. Then compact
3 times. You can see a shrinkage of the file of way over 20% then. I had
some time left at the end of the year so I started compacting users'
pst-files (I was really bored). They can have pst-files on the network up to
100MB and I had one shrunk by over 40 percent (and one of practically 100%
but that's not fair as the file was 30MB's and empty :-D)
