Can anyone recommend a reputable (and economic) dealer of bare bones
systems? ie, Mainboard with CPU and RAM, plus a box and power supply?

For competetive prices Tigerdirect.com has a huge stock of such things a
combos and bare bones systems but if there is a problem with the motherboard
you have to deal with the MB maker which can be a hassal so you have to take
a chance you will get one with no problem. That is a trade off some places
charge more but will replace defective products themselves.

I'm a little wary of TigerDirect.com.

I asked them about their rating at the BBB and they hung up on me! That
aside, thanks for your input.

Not only that, but TD's inexpensive barebones are usually quite low-end
case, power supply, and motherboard. For more $ there may be better
quality, but at the higher price-point there are more reputable vendors.
http://www.resellerratings.com is a good place to investigate providing
investigator is aware that some companies "pad" false positive reviews and
it's more important to look at the problems and how/if they were resolved.

For reliable, you can't go wrong with www.newegg.com - I've never
heard of any complaints, they've done a great job for me. The prices
are very competitive if not absolute lowest, they ship fast without
any hassles.

They have very few "barebones", mostly the mini-ITX type systems -
$$$. They don't put the parts together for you, either. However,
having bought a couple of barebones systems in the past (and getting
thoroughly burned both times), I'd have to say you'd do better just
ordering the parts you really want separately and assembling them
yourself. At least you'll know that they're properly put together.

Good Luck!

I have never had any dealings with Tiger, but in many years on
usenet I have yet to hear a good word about them.

Go to your local computer show...and purchase from a local vendor.
