Sounds like an index file to a database. What's the application that it's
attached to ? (I don't have that one on my xp system directory so Im
assuming it's 3rd party) If you have software tools for that particular
database type you may be able to delete then rebuild the index.

MAIN.IDX is a key file for AOL, not Windows. Thus, Windows restore does not
provide a backup for it. The user needs to do that manually. The easiest
way (for version 9.0 of AOL) is to backup all of the Documents and Settings
directory. That is a good idea, since there are many other important files
contained in that area. I use NtBackup.exe to do this. If it is not on
your hard drive, it is availabel on the XP CDROM.

As for your current problem, there may be a backup copy of MAIN.IDX hiding
somewhere on your hard drive. Try a search of the entire PC for this file.

If that fails, contact AOL. Maybe they have a way to salvage information.
Along those line, be aware that it is safe to install multiple versions of
AOL on one PC, or even multiple copies of the same version. If the
installation can read the old MAIN.IDX, it will copy the settings to the new
one. Otherwise it will initialize a new one from scratch. Your address
book, favorites, are be stored outside of MAIN.IDX. They are also stored
on the AOL server.
