Mailwasher Pro slow and troublesome.

Derrick Fawsitt

I have used Mailwasher Pro for some time successfully but recently it
takes so long to log on and download my emails that I am thinking of
using something else. What should I do, I have it set at the strongest
setting that hides some emails from me as I get about 100 spam a day.
Do I seek an alternative programme or indeed a new method, like everyone
else Spam is now so annoying and time consuming I wonder if I should
change my email address. Trouble is I really sought out my present one
and don't want to change it.

Hi, Derrick.

Like you, I have used Mailwasher for quite some time. However, I have no
problems so I may not be able to help.

Does your ISP have a filter service? I use BT Openworld who filter 90% of
spam before I get it. (About 50 a day)! I check it every so often on their
website (Mail) and have never found anything important filtered out.

Good luck,

Ed

Hi Ed.

I have had no other problems with Mailwasher as such, it looks like my
problems may be caused by the "amount" of spam I get, or allow myself to
get. I say this because another kind poster has pinpointed my problem as
using my main email address for NG's etc. However, I have done that now
and really don't want to change it at this stage.
As to using BT, I use NTL because of their excellent £15 per month
unlimited access which is effectively free when you make £15 worth of
calls a month through them, (which I do easily). So therefore I would
not want to change that either.
No, the solution I want is how to make a difference at this stage
without having to alter my address etc. After all, why should I be
forced to change my address etc. and therefore give in to spammers who
should not be doing it in the first place.
We need laws to control spam, right now, government, are you listening?

Derrick, until we get such laws (don't hold your breath), you have to either
live with the spam on your main email account, or open a new account for use
only on newsgroups. I have a free Hotmail account which I use exclusively
for newsgroups. I don't ever go into it (I let Mailwasher do that). I use
Mailwasher to read whatever is worth reading amongst the spam, and blacklist
the rest. Don't bother with the bounce option. It just uses more of your
time, and doesn't stop the spammers.

I agree with Tom, Derrick.

Trouble is, like you say, once your e-mail is out, it stays out. With so
many spams, Mailwasher is bound to slow down, (even using Filters) much the
same way as any download.

Broadband does help!!

Good luck,

Ed

Thank you both for your replies, I particularly find the advice to drop
bouncing to save time very useful. I will change that immediately, in
the meantime I will have to see if there is another option for me to
change my main address while making sure those people in my friends list
are informed of my new version.

Thanks again folks,

A little test you may want to do with MW is to have it only mark the suspected SPAM instead of automatically deleting it. That doesn't really help the total processing time, other than you see the message headers faster, but after the headers (subject lines) are downloaded you can see MW is going through the list and marking the suspects, which may take several minutes while it compares them to the online SPAM filter sources. If that has to happen before MW shows the messages, it is going to give the slow effect you see. This doesn't change the situation, but gives you a better idea of what is actually happening and perhaps makes the wait a little less irritating. Personally, I don't like to automatically delete messages because I have seen several emails flagged that I was expecting and needed. I just use the "Process Mail" button to clean out the junk after I have scanned the flagged list.

Thank you Bill, that was the old way I had MW configured, I suspect I
should revert back to it and use your way.

All my thanks,

How do I get Mailwasher to only mark for deletion, instead of bounce and
delete? I'm particularly referring to the DNS spam blacklist servers.

Thanks

Janice

Only check delete, don't check bounce or uncheck any messages for bounce in
the list, then click process mail.

As long as you refuse to change your e-mail address in newsgroups not to
mention using it when filling out forms, etc. at a website, you will be a
magnet for spam. Laws are currently working their way through Congress in
the United States and they will be about as effective as the "Do Not Remove"
tag on pillows and mattresses. Most spammers work offshore, in areas that
most of our laws can't touch.

Further, based on your post, you must live in the UK, you have your set of
laws we have ours and this creates an issue for enforcement and how to apply
the laws. Our laws apply to us, not to you unless you happen to be here.

What we need are international laws to cover this kind of thing and
universal worldwide cooperation...DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH!

The government is listening, well ours is, I don't know about Parliament,
but relying on the government alone to resolve this is the same as expecting
the government to protect you from cancer. In the UK, you have universal
coverage and Socialized medicine. It guarantees treatment but I'll bet it
hasn't reduced the number of cases.

You need to be proactive; the first step is in using a dummy e-mail address
in newsgroups.

I have this option already. It still marks mail, not already in my blacklist
but checked against DNS spam blacklist servers, for bounce and delete.
