Mailto protocol association

I have a problem with the 'mailto' protocol. Any time I click on a link on a
web page or in an email, it sends IE into a frenzy, opening dozens of
windows, all with a failure message. I've checked the settings in IE
(Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Set programs/Default programs) and Windows
Mail is ticked as the default application for mailto. Anybody have any
ideas?
