I want to manage a mailing list from Outlook. All I have is a bunch of email
addresses. I know that I can add each of them to the Contacts and then
create a distribution list but this is tiresome. Is there any other way of
managing a list in Outlook? Currently the list is small (25 addresses) but
could grow to several hundred.

Thanks.

You're asking if you can create a mailing list without adding it to your
Contacts?
No.

So must I add each email address to the contact list individually and then
add them to a Distribution List?

Is it possible to send an email to a Category? So if I group my contact list
by category...

Actually, Categories would be a much better way to go than a DL. DL's can be
pretty flakey.
Once you've assigned categories to your Contacts, you can use the "By
Category" view of your Contacts Folder, select the Category Header and then
use Actions > New Message to Contact to send to all the members of the
category.

Thanks Russ - I didn't know that trick about the Actions -> New Message once
the category was selected. I've been looking for that sort of feature for a
while.

My current "problem" is that it puts the category into the TO field and so I
cut/paste it from there to the BCC field. Any idea if you get the category
to go directly into the BCC field to avoid this manual step?

Thanks.

Nope. You can only cut and paste. If you want to put the recipients directly
into the BCC field, a DL will be your only option.

You can email merge to the whole category too - then you don't need BCC.

select the people you want, tools, mailmerge, select merge to Email, write
your subject line in the window that appears, Word will start up. Use the
Insert Merge Fields (NOT Word Fields) function to insert Contacts fields and
then merge to email (not Printer) - you'll need the right toolbars showing
for this.
