mailbox, address book, and mail folders

When I changed from 98 to XP home ed, I lost my mailbox,
folders, and address book. I think they are
still "alive" in the backup of my old computer that XP
saved in case I wanted to roll back. Can you selectively
restore files from this file, or does it restore the
whole 98 version of windows?

That's because the upgrade created a new identity for you, as explained
in
the article linked below. Your old DBX files are still there (or should
be
on your computer) and all you have to do is search for them and follow
the
routine in the article.
