When I close mail, it appears to close, but continues to run in the background.
I have to go to task manager and end process before I can reopen it.
Would appreciate any advice on curing this.

How often do you have Windows Mail set to automatically check for new messages?

I found out that this setting was often causing my Windows Mail to not shut down
completely.

I unchecked the setting and it solved the problem. I now only check for new
messages manually.

It was set to check at start and every 30 minutes thereafter. I changed it
to check manually and rebooted and that seems to have solved the problem.
Thank you.

Some antivirus programs will continue to hold Windows Mail open for a
while. Which antivirus are you running? Make sure it is not configured to
scan emails.

I am using AVG antivirus. It checks the email, but has been doing so for
months with no problem. The only thing that changed was that we installed
roxio.
Changing the email to manual rather than auto seems to have solved the
problem.
roxio could be the problem as computer will not shut down since it was
installed.

Hard to say if Roxio is involved in your email issue, but AVG is
known to have a troublesome email scanner that is not completely
disabled when ostensibly turned off.
Your AVG antivirus was probably installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

I uninstalled AVG and installed AVAST as I have it on another computer.
Changed Mail to check on start and every 30 minutes. It is shutting down
now and will also let me delete emails easily.
Thanks for your help.
