Mail Stuck when IMAP added in 2003

Have a a customer that is using Outlook 2003 works fine - we added a route to
get to a second network on the LAN - works fine
Added an IMAP server on the second network and specified the IMAP ip address
on the second network and the SMTP address of the Exchange server on the
first network.

Mail sits in the outbox, no error message and nothing in the event viewer.

Removing the IMAP server mail works fine again.

We have Office 2002 using the same configuration and works fine.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

IMAP servers do not generate money for Microsoft.
