The mail icon in the system tray, which indicates that there is new mail
waiting to be read, has disappeared from my laptop. Not sure what I have
done - but can anyone suggest how I get it back.

Brink, thanks for the reply. However I think the link you provide is
solving a different requirement. I realise that the system tray icon is a
temporary notification which Windows Mail (and Outlook Express) provides to
show that new unread mail is available. Over the years (with Outlook Express
and more recently with Windows Mail) I have got used to this notification
and I find it useful. However a few days ago I stopped getting the Windows
Mail notification icon on my Vista laptop, i.e.although there is new mail
for me to read, there is no icon - which is a change from how it has been
from when I first got Vista/Windows Mail up until a few days ago. I don't
know what I did to lose the icon - but my question is how do I get back to
the way that it was?

Right-click on the taskbar, select Properties, Notification area.
Is "Hide inactive icons" selected? If so, you can customize
which ones you want to see.

I had looked at the "hide inactive icons" which is selected - and is applied
to all items including the "you have new mail" icon. I have tried
customizing - but nothing gets it working again. I was thinking of
restoring the system to a recent time when the icon was working, but unsure
if that would do anything and the issue is not that important - more an
irritant. Anyway thanks for your input.
