I'm trying to mail merge from MS Word to an Access
2002 .mde file. After locating the .mde file as a
datasource I get a dialog box asking for the encoding that
makes the document readable. It doesn't matter what type
of encoding I choose, I only see un-readable characters.

This doesn't happen with .mdb files.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Paul. The only problem is that it needs to be an
mde file as I don't want users to see the code, etc, plus
some users don't have Access.

Grab my version of word merge sample at my web site.

My example works with mde files.
My example works when the mde file has full security
My example works even when you mix versions of ms-access and word.
My example works even if you have a password on the mde

My example simply works!

Check out the merge example, and read the notes as to why/how it works in a
reliable fashion.

You can find my example at:
http://www.attcanada.net/~kallal.msn/msaccess/msaccess.html

The above code example is designed to be specifically integrated into
*existing* applications.

Not appropriate for the situation....the file needs to be renamed with MDB
extension because he is trying to do the mail merge from Word....not within
his MDE.

Good point Paul.

There is perhaps a good chance that the merge *could* be started from
ms-access using my example code, as then it would solve a lot of problems.

However, if as mentioned, the OP's desire is to start this merge from Word,
(not ms-access), then my suggestions on using my example code is not going
to be much help here.
