I can't do a mail merge from outlook. I get the "Mail Merge Helper" up, click set as directed, the under data source I click get data, use address book, outlook address book, click OK and get an error message. "A required file, SCHDMAPI.DLL, coud not be loaded. Please check your email installation and reinstall Microsoft WORD if necessary." I've tried repairing and reinstalling office, no help. I've done a search on my system for the DLL but it does NOT exist. Just for kicks I successfully did a mail merge from word using outlook contacts but can't from outlook. I did not have this problem with Office 2000. Anyone know where I can get schdmapi.dll and where it needs to go?

Take a look at this MS KB article, it may help:

I tried all of that when I did a search for the DLL It does NOT exist on my machine. This is a problem with the 2003 version not the 2000 version that the article describes, but like I said I tried what the article has said and the DLL does NOT exist on my machine. I had the 2000 version and could mail merge with no problems. I have tried an uninstall/reinstall, I have also tried repairing after a fresh install

What confuses me is you can mail merge from Word

From Outlook Contacts. Click tools>mailmerge. Mail merge contacts panel comes up, use defaults except document type is mailing labels. Click OK. Word opens with dialog to press setupin section 1 of the mailmerge helper dialog. press OK. Press setup in section 1 of the mailmerge helper. this section sets up the type of label I used avery 5160 to my default printer. Press OK.under section 2 of the mailmerge helper I press get data select use address book and select outlook address book

At this point I get an error message that says

"A required file, SCHDMAPI.DLL, coud not be loaded. Please check your email installation and reinstall Microsoft WORD if necessary.

Press OK

I have reinstalled all of Office 2003 including Word and Outlook downloades latest patches and repeated the above numerous times with the same results. Following the article (you provided the link). I verified that Outlook is the default mail client and then when I search for the schdmapi.dll to rename and repair as suggested that dll does not exist on my system. This would explain why it could not be loaded. When I repair at this point it has no effect. The only thing I can figure is that the dll was either deleted when I upgraded to Office 2003 by the setup program, or never existed in the first place.

Wait a minute. Why are you using the Mail Merge Helper in Office 2003? You
should be using the Mail Merge Toolbar or Task Pane. The Mail Merge Helper
is obsolete. When you start a merge from Outlook, you have no need to select
the data source.

Use the Mail Merge Helper only to select the label type, then dismiss it and
use the Mail Merge Toolbar. The error you are getting is because you are
trying to open a data source that has already been opened.

OK thanks, If you were familiar withe the way mail merge worked before you would blow right by the directions at the top of the control box and do like I was doing and get an error. Sounds like a bug to me. MS might need to patch the mail merge helper so you at least can't use the control and get an error.

Agreed. To me it seems a clear oversight that the Mail Merge Helper is
invoked at all. If they wanted to migrate users to using the Mail Merge
Toolbar, why did they keep the Mail Merge Helper around and even still
require it for a few functions?
