When I click Mail button on the toolbar, it opens a new window and asks some user name and password. I tried my passport user name and password, but it doesn't work there. Any suggestions? Could it be some bad .dll file or virus

Doesn't sound like you are using the valid Mail toolbar button. When you
click the Mail button in the toolbar, do you get a dropdown list with Read
Mail, New Message, etc.? If not, you are using some other mail function
integrated into IE and which might be spyware or malware.

For the window that opens after clicking on the Mail button, does it show an
address for that site? If the Address bar is missing, right-click on the
titlebar and select "Make normal window". You might find that you just gave
out your username and password to a hacker if it is not a legit site for any
webmail service to whom you subscribe.

Did you set hotmail as the default mail client? Try changing the mail client in Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab.
