Every time I open Word (in Office XP) I get the message
about enabling macros. Do you know how to get rid of
this message so it doesn't open automatically when I open
Word?

If you get this message on opening Word, the implication is that you have
your security set to caution you about macros and that a macro is trying to
load. That macro could be from an innocent source, such as an add-in or it
may be malicious. The first step is to locate that macro that is trying to
load, by checking what add-ins are present. If that's the source, then set
Word's macro security to trust all installed templates and add-ins. Do not
turn off this warning. It could save your system.

In w2k - "Probably" the same in xp;

"Tools->Macro-Security"
Set the option to low.

The message shouldn't appear unless there is a macro in whatever you are
opening. Your message would indicate that there are macro's present when
you open Word (either in your Normal.dot or an addin).
If you expect/know what the macro's are then it's ok.

Be aware, however, that you may want to leave it as is if there's a
chance that you can receive Word documents from untrusted sources (i.e..
you don't expect any macro's). Setting it to low means that any doc
opened could/will execute an automatic macro for example.

The macro warning is there to warn users of potential macro threats.
It isn't recommended this be set to 'Low' no matter how protected you
think you are. I can easily create a macro that would harm your system
and it would go undetected by your virus scanner. You virus scanner
will only alert you to known viruses.

If you encounter the "Enable Macros" prompt then it should be
investigated before enabling the macros. Not after a macro has been
allowed to run.

For add-ins that contain macros you trust, you can by-pass the prompt
by placing them in your Word Startup folder (location can be obtained
under Tools/Options/File Locations) and then under
Tools/Macro/Security turn on "Trust all installed add-ins and
templates".

For all other documents, you can always disable the macros and then
reopen the file and enable them if you find they are safe.

What if you don't want any macros to load at all, ever? I use Word
extremely rarely, and don't have any use for macros in it. Is there a way
to just disable them permanently?

Set the macro security settings to the highest available and uncheck the
boix to trust templates/add-ins. This will hamper the ability to work with
third party applications. If you want to cripple Word, why not simply use
WordPad for your occasional documents?

I occasionally get documents in word format. Other than that, I never use
it.
