I'm assuming that you're using a version of MS Office, and trying to
open a file which contains macros, in one of the Office programs. Since
macros can contain worms/viruses, the default Office Macro setting
probably has macros disabled. You can change that default setting by
opening the respective Office program for that file, click the Tools
menu, select: Security, and then choose the option that you want. The
above refers to Office 2000, settings for Office XP might be slightly
different. It is advised that you select the Medium setting, so that
you're always asked if you want to run macros. That way, if an email
attachment has a file used by that application, from an unsolicited
source, you can view the file, without running any potentially dangerous
macros.

If you have the security set to High, then you are seeing the expected
result when opening a file that contains macros. This setting disables any
Macros in the file you are trying to open. You can set the security to
Medium and Word will prompt you to either trust the macros in the file, open
it and run the macros or not trust the macros and open the file with the
macros disabled.
