I keep getting a pop up from Macromedia asking me to
update their flash player 6 with no charge. Is this safe
to do so and just what does this software do?

You'll get that pop-up whenever you land on a web page that expects to see a
more recent version of the Flash or Shockwave player than is currently
installed on your computer.

Macromedia is a well known and well respected software company. Their Flash
and Shockwave players are used to create animation.

You are suspicious of pop-ups, and you have every reason to be. One way to
be sure that you're getting the real software is to install it directly from
Macromedia's web site. Once installed, the pop-ups will go away, at least
until Macromedia releases newer versions.

To install, go here for the Flash player:

ockwaveFlash

and here for the Shockwave player:
