I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop running WinME and have recently installed
a new 40GB HDD, "Ghosted" from my old and working, but full original10GB
HDD.

I also have installed a German fan program that monitors temp and
controls the fans.

When I surf the Internet I am constantly asked at numerous sites if I want
to install Macromedia FlashPlayer 7.0.

When I answer YES and initiate the download, my computer freezes/locks up
(though I still have the mouse), with the fans stepping up and running at
high speed with temp at 57C. (possibly going higher because the computer IS
locked up?) I must do a hard shutdown even with the mouse cursor moving!

As far as I can tell, this Macromedia Flash Player7.0 installation lock up
is my only problem since my HDD upgrade.

I know I *HAD* a Macromedia Flash Player installed PRIOR to HDD upgrade. I`m
not sure whether or not it was 7.0

Anybody here have any ideas as to what may be my problem and it`s solution?

thanks,

Matt

If you are not downloading the file for Macromedia Flash, that is what
I would suggest. After the download, I would scan the downloaded file
with your anti virus program, turn off the anti virus program, and
install the program. It could be a corrupted download, or a program
such as an anti virus program causing your problem.

I would be very cautious about downloading that type of stuff...
wouldn't be too hard for a malicious 'site to prompt about
installing something OTHER than what you actually downloaded.

I suggest you determine if you really want/need Flash 7. If so,
you can download it direct from Macromedia and install, then that
should put an end to the prompts to download and install, which
BTW, are not really prompts to download, since the
!@#$%$!@@#$##$@#$@ thing downloads anyway unless you disable that
particular IE flaw, it merely asks if you want to install what
you already downloaded. After having installed it from
Macromedia 'site you shouldn't be prompted again.

If instead you want to block the downloads, you could use a hosts
list to block (divert) the download from download.macromedia.com
and activex.microsoft.com, or perhaps more secure would be to
install a 3rd party app that allows disabling that and more, like
Spyware Blaster,
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Only reason I listed all this pertaining to Flash is that you
report it to be your ONLY problem... if you have other problems
then a further investigation may be necessary... the system
really shouldn't be locking up on only flash downloads but it is
uncommon for it to be the only problem. At any rate since you
keep being prompted it would be good to decide one way or the
other about having Flash on the system... I despise it myself,
don't want animated ads all over webpages, though still have it
installed on one system simply because some websites foolishly
design their whole homepage or navigation menus around it.
