Machines "disappear"

Within the past week, possibly as the result of a
security update, I am unable to connect to any machine in
the workgroup (home LAN) by name. I can connect by using
the IP address of the machine, but IP addresses are
dynamic and typing them is inconvenient.

I can't see anything wrong with the network settings on
any of the machines.

All of the printers (including the Mac that's on the LAN)
can communicate through the router to the Internet.
Nobody can see any other machine in the workgroup.

A friend who has a LAN with W2K machines is having an
identical problem, so we suspect a recent security update.

If you've solved this problem, I'd love to know how!

Thanks.

As it turns out, I've just found the solution. I wasn't
looking closely enough. NetBIOS over TCP/IP had been
disabled on all the machines. Now that I've enabled it
again, the machines can see each other.

Just to clarify - could you see the workgroup in Network
Places and not the machines, or - like me - did you get
the error message after a while saying that the workgroup
was not accessible ?
