About once a week, my XP pro system goes to the blue
screen saying MACHINE_CHECK_ERROR and telling me to
remove recently installed stuff. I have an Opteron
processor and Asus SK8N motherboard and the performace is
phenomenal except for this. My updates are up-to-date.

When you remove "recently installed stuff" does the blue screen go away? If
so, I'd say you've identified your problem.

Eveything is new. Radeon 9200SE, Motherboard, registered
RAM, CPU, no way to remove it all. I think the
XP/Opteron is the problem but I guess I'm stuck with it.
Denny

Could "recently installed stuff" include software? Or perhaps some of the
hardware parts are incompatible?

Rocky

No new software. But lotsa new drivers for the new
hardware. Here's a weird thing: A driver from Nvidia
would not install from Windows update. Tech support
worked with me for 10 days on this, then it DID work. But
I noticed that the working install was dated the 10th,
the failed install was dated the 3rd. So obviously
people besides me goof up too. Since the
machine_check_error only occurs after the motherboard and
new cpu were installed, it has to be a compatibility
issue with XP, or something like that. If the machine
was busted, it wouldn't then work for several days on
reboot.

This is a hardware related error. Overheating is a common cause, and
it can also result from overclocking.

See MVP Jim Eshelman's web page for STOP errors at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm and click on the "9C: Machine
Check...." link in the left side column for some additional details
and links to related articles.

Good luck

Were your new motherboard and CPU *identical* to the previous ones?

If not then you *must* do a Repair Install of your Windows XP in order
to get it properly configured for the new hardware.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for detailed
instructions on doing this.

Note that a Repair Install will preserve all of your installed
applications, user data files, and configuration settings. However
all Windows Updates will have to be reinstalled.

Two cautions:
1. Make sure you have your critical data backed up. Murphy's Law
tends to ensure that if you do not have a backup you will seriously
regret not doing so, but if you do have a backup it will probably not
be required.

2. Make sure that you do not connect the computer to the Internet
until you have firewall protection in place, such as the Windows XP
internal firewall. Otherwise your computer will almost certainly be
infected by the Blaster virus within 30 seconds of connecting.

Good luck
