I have XP Professional, and every so often, I wake up the next morning and
find the machine has shut down. The electricity didn't go off. There are
no errors when I boot the machine back up. Is there something in XP that
causes the machine to shut down?

Thanks

Check if you can find further information in the Control Panel >
Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Also make sure that no Scheduled
Task is set up for this and that your Power settings (Control Panel >
Power Options) do not do this.

Power settings are fine, no scheduled tasks do this. The last entry in the
Event Viewer, at 3:29 AM, is:

"The WMI Performance Adapter service entered the stopped state."

The next entry is 3 hours later when I turn the machine on. What does this
mean?

Thanks.

Exit all applications that run in the background and see if this
helps. If so, re-enable them one by one to find out what causes the
shutdown.
