your modem LED behavior are normal.

anyway what is crashes means?
(Blue screen? reboot? or somthing eles? do you have stop error message?)
no error at all on event viewer?
do you have enough system resource? (RAM, Hard disk space, etc.)
what kind of software running on system.
(check startup program task manager)
do you any error or mark on device manager?

First open Start>Settings>Control Panle>System
Click Advance Tab
Click Startup and recovery
checked on write an event to the system log
checked on send administrative alart
uncheck Automatically reboot.
then if you have Stop error you can see now.
also you can see minidump file with Dumpchk.exe from windows 2000 CD.

also check Event viewer if you have any error.
(Start>Programs>Administrative Tool > Event Viewer)
check your Power Supply
(is that enough power to supply all your component?)
check you componets drivers.

I've got a problem with a Win2K SP4 machine which periodically crashes with
no clue given in the event log.
I *think* it could be the ADSL USB modem made by Zyxel ( Prestige 630-11 ) .
I notice that there are 2 lights on the modem. 1 is for USB and the other
for ADSL. The USB lights flicker constantly whereas the ADSL lights are
steady green. Is this an indication of a problem or am I looking at the
wrong thing?

Thx for your reply. I note my lights are normal which is one item solved.
To give you better information, I mean that the machine just closes down
without any warning. Just the same as if the power had been switched off.It
reboots itself and comes back up online after the usual checkdisk procedure
after an abnormal shutdown of course.
There are no yellow items in device manager.
I have 3 hard disks and there is lots of space on each one.
There is a much software running and it doesn't happen on startup, so I
don't feel the startup control is too relevant. I am running Norton
Corporate with real time protection if that's any clue.
There are no clues in the event log. So where do I go from here?

I have done this and now end up with the following information.
Looking around on the MSFT site I can see some resources on this but in case
anyone can say quickly what the offending item is.
