Andrew

Whilst playing Doom 3 my machine will crash and report a Machine Check
Exception 9c. I have the following:

AMD 64 3000+ CPU
OCZ Modstream 520W PSU (just fitted as another forum suggest this had
classic symptoms of being power related!)
2 x 512 Mb Elixir PC 3200 RAM
Leadtek 6800 GT 256Mb AGP graphics card
2 x 80 Gb Seagate SATA drives (RAID 0)
Aureon 5.1 Fun PCI soundcard
3 x Optical drives
Windows XP Home SP2

I have recorded my voltages whilst playing and they are very stable. CPU
temperature increases from 34oC to 40oC and the CPU fan goes from 3000 rpm
to 4000 rpm. The crash seems to be at random, might be whilst graphics are
fairly intens with lots going on or when I am stood still.

Any help would be much aprpeciated.

Thanks,

Andy

Hi Andrew,

Actually, exception errors are seldom if ever caused by the PSU.
Reboots and freezups would indicate a PSU problem. What you
are describing would more likely be caused by a RAM problem.
I looked up the 9c stop error on Microsoft's KB and they also
point to RAM: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329284

Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

If the above fails, please have a look at these other suggestions ....

The following applies to most games in general, and not just to the games that
may be listed in the KB Article referred to in this post.

SYMPTOMS:

When you start or play any one of the games that is listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one or more of the
following symptoms:

•The game stops responding.
•The game quits unexpectedly.
•The computer restarts unexpectedly.

Additionally, you may receive the following error message after you receive the Gathering Exception Data dialog box:
<Game Name>has encountered a problem and needs to close.

RESOLUTION:

Method 1: Restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure
Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Game
Method 3: Adjust graphics hardware acceleration
Method 4: Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic tool
Method 5: Temporarily disable the sound card in Windows
Method 6: Lower sound acceleration
Method 7 : Download and install the most recent version of DirectX
Method 8: Update your video driver
Method 9: Update your sound driver
Method 10: Scan your computer for viruses
Method 11: Remove spyware
Method 12: Install the latest VIA chipset drivers
Method 13: Create a new user account in Windows XP
Method 14: Change the compatibility setting

Thanks this is the most comprehensive advice yet. I have downlaoded the
Windows memory diagnostic tool and will run it tonight. I have also moved
my memory from dual channel to a single chnnel configuration to see if that
helps. Will work through the comprehensive details you have provided.

Many thanks,

Andy
