When I am working on a file on a MAC and someone on a PC opens the same file,
they do not receive a read only notice and the document I am working on
becomes read only. I only know that it’s read only when I try to save it.

Has anyone seen this before?

Not here but I work by myself and am pretty careful not to open the same file
from more than one computer at once. Are you the same person who posted a
similar problem to the Mac PPT group just recently? The one storing these files
on a NAS box?

If so, it's a good idea to include all of the details like this when asking a
question.

If not ... wellahhhh ... never mind. ;-)

I've seen a lot of other weird stuff when using a Mac with files on a Windows 2k
server share though. You practically have to reboot the mac to get it to
register changes made by another PC on the network to the files.

This is my first posting. We have a mainly a Windows 2003 Network with 2 brand new Mac Pro. The MAC's will be in a powerpoint document (does not happen with Word) and they'll be put to read only when a Windows user opens the same document. The Windows user will not be notified that a it's already opened, will make changes and save them! The MAC user will only notice that they're in read only when the title bar says "Name of Document (Read Only)"

Sounds almost as though the server's giving PC clients preferential treatment over the Macs.

I'm not at the office where I can try this but will give it a shot when I get back.
