I've just received an iMac - the classic 233mhz blue bondi - and it
desperately needs some more software. I've been a bit discouraged trying to
find freeware in the Apple world - seems 99% is shareware. Any experienced
Mac people with some good links? I'm running OS 8.6 by the way.

By the way, is it me or does it seem that Google is returning more and more
irrelevant items? Searchin ain't what it used to be.

Bill, try these links.

They are not all purely freeware, but if you look there are some gems in
them.
