Microsoft Antispyware starts to check files, gets 14000+ in
then stalls and can't be disabled despite even a soft boot.
Any ideas?

Followup. I just let the scan run, and after some 46
minutes, it finished. The main stall point was on a file
called "variable browser hijack scan". I don't mind
spending that much time, but it's a far cry from the 2-3
minutes suggested. System was deemed clean, BTW.

Thanks for persisting!

The current program seems to have some performance issues around moments
when it is dealing with large amounts of ascii data--lists of files, etc.
It wouldn't surprise me if the pause you saw had an origin in that same
issue.

IE.s ("junkbin") temporarily folders for example...........

Between 200-600 MB of junk in every modern PC ;(

For sure !

Is there a particular location in the registry it hangs up on?

Steve

I have cleaned a lot of PCs and if we take a 1-2 year old PC
with
100GB harddisk, you find 200-600 MB of junk in all of them.

And this is also default "hidden" files.......... ;(

Every scan "stops"/takes a long time within these
temporarily folders.

So remove this junk at first step and then let MSAS work
with scanning/cleaning.

I took part in an online discussion with some very knowledgable folks about
IE recently. They universally said that the defaults for the size of the
TIF were rediculous these days, and recommended a much smaller set size.

Nobody wanted to be quoted or pinned down about a size. I've been using 100
megs or so.

And you also have all folders with setups from different
programs, a real
hidden mess for most users.

I cant understand why MS dont do anything about this.

I have mine at 1 MB........... ;) And I set every TIF to
that size.
