I have a 40 gig external maxtor 3000le hard drive usb 1.1
and 2.0.
It was working Fine. I decide to reformat my hard drive I
back some things up on it. Reformated then went d/l'd all
the windows updates (all those crazy viruses) Plugged in
my usb cable the safely remove hardware icon pops up in
tray and says usb device detected. Then it will say
Maxtor (the model number of the hard disk here)
installed. Then I will get a balloon pop up that says I
can now use my usb device. It installed just like it
always has. Go to my computer my drive dont show up. Tap
f5 a few billion times. Nothing never shows up. Go to
maxtor.com made sure I got the newest drivers. still
nothing.

So then I got to thinking I installed a patch.....this
patch.

Then I hit all the news sites looking 4 something that
would be like "M$ hotfix breaks usb" nothing so then I
went here

http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?
NewsGroup=microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware&SLCID=US&ICP
=GSS3&sd=GN&id=fh;en-us;newsgroups
With in the first 3 pages I see a lot of usb not working
or broke usb ports. All within the same time they release
the patch.what are the chances? So I go to add remove
progs to remove the kb822603 (roughly) take it out.
Replug in the external hd still same situation doesnt
show up in my computer. So I restart ......and same
thing. I go to device manager remove all usb roots,
hubs...etc reboot same thing.

any ideas guys thanks

If it is a USB 2.0 device make sure you have SP1 installed again. If I
remember correctly there is no USB 2.0 support in WinXP until SP1 is
applied.
