M-Audio DIO 2448

I recently installed a 1999 M-AUDIO DIO2448 card. XP found
the Crystal Audio chip and installed its own drivers, which
meant that I was unable to access the SPDIF I/O (which is
the whole point of installing the card). I had been lead
to expect this from the M-Audio site which told me there
was no way to install its own drivers that work with W2K.
Nevertheless, I forced XP to install the M-Audio drivers,
and to my great surprise, after XP had backed up whatever
it backs up before installing unsigned drivers, it worked
perfectly, SP in, SP out, d/a working correctly - I was
overjoyed.

But not for long. After a few days of perfect digital I/O,
suddenly (after adjusting the overall volume from the
Windows taskbar volume control, output from the card
stopped, and I noticed that any software trying to play
through the card (for instance checking an alert from the
'sounds' c/p) would try and play and then not be able to
continue - like the forward arrow would not change to a
square in the 'sounds' c/p, as if the sound was still
trying to play.

So I re-installed the M-Audio software, and again all was
well for a bit until the same problem occurred. In the
end, every time I wanted to use the card I had to
re-install the software and now I have a Zillion restore
points filling up my boot drive (how do I get rid of
restore points I no longer need??)

In the end I'm baffled, but I'm sure the problem is just a
hair's breadth away somewhere in a registry setting... or
something...

Any help would be gratefully received.
