My dad has just built his own PC which is working nicely with Windows2000
pro ... in every way except

When first installed his Lucent Winmodem was working correctly. However, at
some point after installing programs (including Serif Photoshop 6 and
Omnipage pro9) and some windows updates (including sp3 and an update to
IE) - he is not clear which install/update caused the problem the modem
stopped working. No new hardware was added, only software.

We have tried reinstalling drivers. We have tried running the program
supplied to completely remove all trace of the modem, physically removing
the modem, booting the PC up without it, then re-installing in a different
PCI slot. Each time the result is the same, the installation seems to run
correctly but the modem does not work and the Device Manager reports.
"Device cannot start - code 10".

He even went back to the retailer and got a replacement modem. But exactly
the same problem.

Has anyone got any other ideas. He is on the verge of getting the modem
exchanged for another make... is that a good option?

From my own experience I'd say that getting a decent hardware modem (
as opposed to a Winmodem ) would be the best bet. They're not that
expensive these days ( even cheaper in Ebay ), and far less likely to
cause problems.
Stick to the well regarded brands ( such as US Robotics, Hayes, or
Pace if you're in the UK ... they come with UK Caller ID compatibility
built in, which can be useful ). You might want to check the
availability of drivers for W2000 first though.

Regards,

While I agree with most of what you said, I thought I should point out
that a true hardware modem is one of the few devices where you WON'T
need to hunt for drivers in windows2000. The generic 28.8, 33.6, or
56K drivers that are included in windows2000 will work fine. If it's
really a hardware modem, and it complies with the Hayes command set
(unless it's a 2400baud or slower, it definitely will) then you don't
need to hunt check "availability."

That's one of the big reasons they're recommended, especially for
users of operating systems where driver support is iffy.

Thanks very much. Dad did the re-install just one more time with a new
driver we'd found on-line. A miracle happened and its working now!

But if we have any more trouble with it your recommendations will be very
useful
