I had a virus. got rid of it. (I think!) ran a norton
virus scan. everything was clean, so I logged off. left
the room. when I came back, I had an error
message "lsass.exe application has an error--press ok to
terminate" did that and nothing but my pointer on the
screen. pushed button to reboot, and same message. can't
reboot, log on or nothing. HELP!!!!

I somewhat recently had a problem very similar to this. You might want to try pressing F8 when the computer is loading. (Windows XP) Then go into safe mode. If it loads, try running your antivirus software again. You might also like to try to find the problem in an unknown program that you don't remember downloading. Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to search the hard disk. If safe mode doesn't load, I can be of no more assistance. My level of expertise is not quite that high. Try asking someone else. As a last resort, you could clean install it, like I had to. Only do this as a LAST RESORT. All of your files will be deleted, so be CAREFUL!!!

sounds very similar to the beagle virus going around try
going onto a freinds computer look up symatec again but
look at the left hand update column it includes downloads
and ifo on how you might have gotten the virus via kazzaa
etc. burn to a disc then run that through your computer .
that should clear up the problem. if you do infact have the
beagle likly your exe. files will eventually be corrupted
so try to spend as little time on your computer as possible
if explorer.exe doesnt start next time you boot up go to
your task manager and manually start it then run the norton
fix it tools that you downloaded.. hope this gets to you
soon enough and is of some help..
