I received a "lsass.exe" error yesterday and my computer
crashed. I was attempting to log-on to the web and Pal-
Talk was trying to start up and the computer locked up.
None of my keys responded, including Ctrl/Alt/Del or the
power button. I ended up having to un-plug the computer
to get the thing to stop. When I turned it back on, it
prompted that it had to check the disk. AFter checking
the disk, I got an lsass.exe error and everything went to
hell from there. The computer did nothing - absolutely
nothing. I called the Gateway Help line at $1.95 per
minute and they had me delete all my files and reload
drivers, applications, files, etc. After getting
everything running, I'm getting a message that says
windows has to shut down with a 60 second count down. Did
I screw up somewhere in the re-load process? I'm not on
the computer right now. I have a Gateway 700 running
Windows XP - it is 1 year and 14 days old (out of
warranty).

Does the notice about shutdown mention the NT Authority and something about
RPC? If yes, it sounds like you forgot to enable your firewall before going back
online and got hit with Blaster (aka Lovesan).

To fix:

Use Start> Run and type in
shutdown -a
to abort the shutdown.

Then see the references below for more information about what it is, how to
remove it and how to protect your system against future infection.
