I recently installed w98se on a older computer and the sound is very
low. I looked at all of the volume controls in windows and pushed them
up to max.(task bar, cd player, multimedia) which helped a little. The
speakers don't have a control. The MB is a ECS k7ama with build in
sound, I used their driver disk. What else do you suggest?

Many low-end sound cards don't have a lot of power to drive speakers. I
imagine the built-in sound circuit of just about any motherboard will have
almost nothing, as far as output amplification goes. If the speakers don't
have a control, that would seem to indicate that the speakers are not
amplified. The best solution would probably be to buy a better sound card.
The easier solution would be to buy amplified speakers. Just keep in mind
that garbage in equals garbage out. That's why I'd suggest trying a new
sound card, first. -Dave

Powered speakers.

To be honest the speakers are junk, I will see if I can dig out a card
and speakers. I thought I was missing some setting or adjustment. I may
have used powered speakers last time the system was in use. Thanks for
answering!

Using speakers with a built in amplifier as the output provided by the
onboard sound is line level only.
