"So I was on the web & get this warning about my "Virtual Memory" being low(what the....?!). Can somebody please tell me what this means & what virtual memory is? Is it my fault that it's low & if so what can I do to fix this? Does it have anything to do with downloading & such? Thanks for all replies.

Virtual Memory is actually unused hard drive space that Windows will access
and use as it needs it. It is sometimes called the Page File. Be wary of
windows that pop up when surfing the web, they are not all legitimate
Windows messages. Unless you have limited hard drive space there is no
worry that your Virtual Memory is "low".

Kevin has a point, often these are spam popups that appear as windows warnings, trying to get you to buy some software you don't need. Pagefile/Virtual memory is hard drive space used as 'virtual RAM' to keep true physical RAM open for current tasks. Have you installed any RAM sticks on your PC recently? A good rule of thumb is to make sure your virtual memory = 1.5 times installed physical RAM. To check, right click 'my computer'> click the 'advanced' tab> 'settings' under 'performance'> 'advanced' tab> and check the setting for 'total paging file for all drives'. Again, this should be 1.5 times installed RAM. It usually self-adjusts based on installed RAM, so chances are you will not need to make any changes. Hope this helps some.

Hi Omega,
i have the message when i am just working maybe with a lot fo applications
at the same time. So I guess i should not worry too much about it. i check
and i indeed have 1.5 the Ram as virtual memory.

The question is how do I speed up my computor? At present it runs very slow
and the Virtual Memory message always appears. My computer is always trying
to increase or upgrade memory. Still very slow

That's an extremely difficult question to answer since you've told us
essentially nothing about the problem. Please answer the following
questions:

1. How slow is "very slow"? Put a number on it, even if approximate.

2. Is it slow doing everything, or just some things? Which things?

3. Has it always been slow, or has it gotten slower over time?

4. If it got slower, what changes did you make, or what software did
you install just before it got slower?

5. What is your hardware configuration? In particular, how much RAM do
you have?

6. How old is the computer?

7. What applications do you run?

8. What anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall programs do you run?
Are they kept up to date?

9. What programs start automatically when you boot and run in the
background.
