low system resources

I don't know whether it's Windows 98 problem or outlook problem. I DO know
it's MY problem :*)

I have windows 98 se
Outlook 2000
384.0 mg RAM

after running a few programs and closing them, I get a message that says I
have low system resources. I seem to be able to only run one program at a
time on this machine. There's 5 gigs of free space. I don't know which
programs to disable at startup, but the real problem seems to be once the
computer has been running for a while -- not at startup.

The thought about outlook is that it doesn't seem to always close down like
it should. sometimes I get a message from "plaxo" that outlook hasn't
closed
properly.

So, I have to reboot my system several times a day to open, for example,
QuickBooks 2001 and Photoshop or any 2 programs. On my other computer at
home, I can have 5 programs running!

Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Do control Alt Delete after a startup. See just what you are loading, Do you
need everything loaded at boot? If you don't need them loaded at boot then
don't!
There is a resource meter you may have installed with widows, or you can
install it from your Windows Install CD. Start-Programs-Accessories-System
Tools-Resource Meter

Have you checked the temperature of the CPU as it takes that a while to
warm up and you problem could well co-incide with the CPU overheating.
Just a thought.

If you download SiSoftware Sandra you will be able to obtain the
necessary readings.

In addition to earlier good advice get rid of all your old crappy buildups
of cookies temp internet files etc etc including index.dats (Use Dos for
that) and download and run a spyware detector like Spybot or AdAware to see
if something very sinister has installed itself on your machine.

Actually, I did that -- ran (I think it was called) "adware" and it took out
all my saved passwords for all my sites etc! I also periodically delete my
temp files. I was told to reinstall win98 so I even did THAT. Something
continues to "build up" on the machine as I use the computer. It's not
hot -- fan seems to work. I just run out of resources.

what's loaded is (and I don't know what most of this is) If anyone can tell
me what I DON'T need to load, I will try that!

explorer
ccap
internat
msnmgr
aim
gmt (part of gator -- which I like and it works well on my XP machine!)
gator (i like this)
pfppop70
qbagent2001 (for quickbooks)
acrotray
ibserver
wjview
loadqm
cmesys
ibguard
dw
point32
atiptaxx
systray
mdm
ati2
evxx
instalstub (for plaxo -- address program)
schoolpopshoppingbuddy (I want to uninstall this and just use as needed for
pay-backs to schools for internet purchases, but I don't know how to install
it and NOT have it load automatically!)

Again, thanks for ANY suggestions!

First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.
Only last, go to StartUpCop.

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's StartUpCop has "undo", and it is more than a
combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup
Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a
permanent delete. Of course, first see whether the app has an option in
it's own menus to remove itself from the Startup Group. This is
configurable, and one may maintain multiple configurations.

Update definitions & check for viruses, and

is gabby in it's "Checks" & "Fixes" logs. Turn them off in "Settings".
