Low resolution bootup

After years of being able to set the resolution in Control Panel/Display/Settings and have it stay that way, my system has decided to boot up only in low resolution (640-480), forcing me to reset it to 800-600 every time I boot up. It gives me a balloon message saying the resolution is too low and some objects may not show up on the window and asks me to click on the balloon to increase the resolution. This works OK, but is a nuisence to have to do every time. After I shut down and start up again it reverts to the 640-480 resolution again. How can I correct this

Did you try to update the video driver already?
