I keep getting an error message that says the system is
low on virtual memory and Windows is increasing its size.
I've tried tweaking the page file size, but it just seems
to have made it worse. I now sometimes get "size of
pagefile.sys is not valid" error messages at startup. What
is the best size for virtual memory? I have a 600 mhz
processor and 64 MB RAM.

At 64mb of ram you should purchase more ram.
XP min.requirments i thought were 128mb,either way,for
the dollars spent, theres no other upgrade to a computer
that compares to memory, its the least expense, with the
greatest benifit.Microsoft says,min.1 1/2 X ram,max.is
3X ram,86 and 192max.

Your memory is definitely your problem. Like Andrew said, you need to add
some RAM to your computer. XP's minimum requirement is 128mb of RAM but it
is recommended that you have 256mb.
