Love my Canon i475 - what's comparable?

I loved the price and the look of the print, and the cost of the ink was
better than anything else. Now my wife wants to buy a printer and when I
went to look at the Canon's, all their numbers have changed. Do they still
make a printer that uses the 24 Black? It's so nice to be able to buy an
ink cartridge for less than $10. Recommendations?

what about an IP4200? Just saw one advertised at Buy.com for $78.
If you are focused on using inexpensive ink, the previous generation of
Canon pixma printers have bci-6 and bci-3ebk cartridges that can be
refilled. There are also aftermarket cartridges that are widely available,
although you would be well advised to use only cartridges that others have
reported as being of good quality. There are a few vendors whose products
have been used successfully by participants of this newsgroup. The ip4000
and ip5000 were very decent general purpose printers that used the
above-mentioned cartridges. You may be able to find an ip5000. The ip4200
and ip5200 are the newest generation of Canon printers that are the updated
version of the 4000 and 5000 but with what Canon describes as improved inks.
They use a different cartridge that is slightly more expensive and has a
computer chip in it. There are currently no aftermarket compatable
cartridges due to the computer chip. There are a few vendors who sell bulk
ink to refill them but the printer recognizes when a previously empty
cartridge is reinserted and "nags" you about it! The chip is used to
provide better monitoring of ink levels as it is important to not run the
cartridge dry. If you refill the cartridges you will have to visually
monitor the ink levels - not a big deal. By the way, Measekite, our
resident troll, will come back with his usual diatribe against considering
aftermarket products. Pay no attention as he has no experience with these
products. Many participants on this NG have years of positive experience
refilling cartridges and/or using aftermarket compatable cartridges for many
manufacturers and many models of printers.

WHEN CONSIDERING FEATURES, SPEED, AND PRICE POINT THIS IS A REPLACEMENT
FOR THE IP3000 AND THE IP5200 IS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE IP4/5000.

YOU WILL GET VERY SIMILIAR RESULTS BUT THE SPEED IS MUCH SLOWER. SEE
WHAT KIND OF DEALS YOU CAN GET ON AN IP5200 AND BUY EITHER. OVER THE
LONG HAUL SPEED WITH A LITTLE BETTER QUALITY IS WORTH IT BUT YOU BE THE
JUDGE.

THE GUY WANTS INEXPENSIVE INK NOT THE REFILL CRAP.
WHO CARES
A JOKE
THEY USE CANON OEM INK AND THAT IS WHAT IS RECOMMENDED

ip4000 can stil be had cheaply:

Respectfully, the sites you listed were quoting the printer at $150ish,
not taking into account shipping. The BUY.com deal at about $80 for
the ip4200 I think included free shipping. MSRP was $149.99 but many
bought them when it was sub $100.

Unless one was planning to buy non-oem cartridges I'd lean tward the
ip4200 at $80.

Agree. But I thought the original poster implied the ease of refilling
as one criterion and in this case extra $60 might be worth for not
having a hassle of chipped cartridges.

Yea, if that's the criterion i'd lean tward the ip5000 rather than the
ip4000 as the pricetag seems to be $150ish + shipping. You at least
get some of the benifits of the new head design but without the pesky
chips, though you can still "refill" a ip4200/ip5200 just from what
i've read you have to pop the lid to check the ink levels.

ONLY THE IDIOTS MAKE A TIZZY FOR THAT

AFAIK, there are none with removeable ink carts and tri-color cart like the
BCI24. The x000 Pixma line did have one though.

The new models either use tri-color Head-On-Cart (Pixma iP1600), or
individual carts (Pixma iP3200 or and higher), with better value with the
CLI8/PGI5 carts.
