Loud random noise

I get a loud random noise coming from my speakers sometimes when I go from
one page to another whilst on the Interne. If I clear down and start again
its OK. I remember years ago, when I had an Amega computer, that a virus did
that with the screen showing random colour rapidly changing. But now when
I get the noise there are no colours. Could this be a virus I have run
norton and it does not find any problems?

it could be a virus or it could be death rays from mars... it's
generally not possible to diagnose a virus from symptoms alone... you've
already tried scanning - if you suspect you might have a virus your
scanner can't detect then about the best you can do is try a different
scanner...

however, if your norton is entirely up to date and was able to scan your
entire drive successfully then chances are actually pretty good that you
don't have a virus (some other form of malware perhaps, but not a virus)...

I had a similar incident with some odd sounds being played out of nowhere,
until I realized that when I moused over (by accident) a particular banner
ad, the ad actually was coded to play this sound. No idea if that could be
what happened with you, though.
