904,772.....this is is after being connected for 11
minutes does this seem like alot????..I am using Win2k, I
am on Lan with anouther Comp..we are connected throught a
switch..to Cable..i am not shared nor is he..i seem to be
virus free as does he..any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance

If you don't have a router/switch between you and the Internet, you should
go get one. I'm using the Linksys BEFSR41 and it blocks communications that
originate outside of my LAN, while allowing anything originating from
inside. I use this in combination with Zone Alarm to check on any programs
trying to communicate out from my PC. Zone Alarm used to notify me quite a
bit about various IPs that were trying to initiate communication to my
computer, but after purchasing the router/switch it has dropped to zero. You
can get them via the net from Amazon or Newegg, or locally from BestBuy or
other computer stores.

Here is a link to this product, though there are many others available now:

John,

That does sound like a lot. Of course, if your cable is fast enough,
you could get that easily. What are you doing during those 11
minutes? ;)

But seriously, virus protection is not enough right now. You also
need to check for adware / spyware. Spybot S&D and HijackThis (both
free), with the expert advice from SWI Forums, is a good idea for
anybody. This article will explain everything:

OK, John,

Be sure and give Spybot / HijackThis a try. Antivirus products like
AVG and Panda will NOT find spyware - spyware and viruses are not the
same. Though Symantec is trying to detect spyware, they aren't there
yet. You have to check for spyware separately, and Spybot /
HijackThis are two of the best spyware detectors (and both are free).

Also consider getting a port monitor / process monitor. I use Port
Explorer
(http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexplorer/index.php?page=home) to
identify suspicious network traffic, and Process Explorer
(http://www.sysinternals.com/) to find out about suspicious programs.
Both come in free versions. Both are a lot more fun to use than
sitting around wondering what's going on.

Cheers,

Chuck
