Hi,
Please help. I am absolutely lost. I used to connect to
the internet thro' a Linksys router/DSL with my Windows
2000 desktop and my XP laptop independently. I decided to
setup a home network. I thought the Wizard would make my
job easier but something seems to have happened and I
cannot get a connection at all.

Crime scene:
Started XP Home Networking wizard. It told me that it
had detected 3 network adapters Ethernet, I394 and
Wireless and decided to bridge them on my thoughtless
request. I selected that my laptop(XP) was connected thro
a gateway (router??) and then finished. I found I could
not connect at all.

My efforts
- Removed bridge (right click). Removed adapters from
bridge.
- Tried connecting directly to DSL modem with to Ethernet
port. ipconfig gives IP address 169.254.2.174.
- Created PPPoE without ICF.

I contacted Yahoo DSL and with their help
- created new PPPoE without ICF
- removed hardware LAN adapter(then restarted)
- unchecked McCafee Firewall, Qos Packet scheduler,TCP/IP
(restarted)
- uninstalled McCafee (restarted)
- did a netsh ip ih reset all ( restarted)
- TCP/IP set to obtain IP/DNS automatically
I now see the 2 connections 1) Broadband PPPoE and 2) LAN
bothsend and receive bytes but the IE still cannot browse.
Did a remove on IE to previous config (restarted)
- Still stuck.
- ipconfig still gives a IP address of 169.254.2.74.
It appears to me that my laptop is not able to setup a
dynamic IP address given to it for the session ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. There is nothing
wrong with my DSL connection. I can still browse with my
desktop.

Issues after running XP Networking Wizard
You may have some difficulties after running XP Networking Wizard. The
symptoms are 1) You cannot connect to other computers on your network or
the other computers do not appear when you click Entire Network. The other
computers can't ping your computer or access to your computer. The following
are some known issues.
1. The Bridge Connections may be enabled if you add second NIC on a XP
computer and run the Networking Wizard.
2. XP's built-in ICF and ICS accidentally activated on the LAN connections
when running the Networking Wizard. To disable the XP ICF and ICS, go to the
Properties of the connection, Advanced, and uncheck ICS and ICF.

Robert,
Many thanks for your reply. I will check your suggestion 1). My laptop
contains I394,Wireless and a Ethernet adapter. I did remove bridge connections for Wireless and Ethernet card but may it is still there for the I394.

2) Regarding suggestion- 2 I did uncheck ICS and ICF by clicking the Advanced tab.

Also based on one of "how-to" articles I selected "administrative tools","services" and stopped
ICS/ICS and set it to start manually and alsostopped it. It was set to start automatically. Tried to bring up IE. It did not work. After a retstart ICS/ICF was again set to be started automatically.

I noticed something peculiar after having run XP Network Wizard. My McCafee Activity showed that there was not activity and no processes were trying to communicate with the internet. I know that when things are working "alg.exe"Application Layer Gateway", services.exe " Services and.." and svchost.exe run. I believe these are required for HTTP, DNS etc.

Also I found that in "administrative tools","services" Application Layer Gateway was set to started manually instead of automatically. Is it supposed to be like that ? Anyway I set it to start automatically and tried restarting. It did not work. I just saw that in Windows 2000 services.exe is "DNS Client" . Should this also be set to be started automatically? Let me know if you have any other ideas.

Thanks
Ganesh (e-mail address removed)

I wouldn't recommend changing the service settings, you can get yourself in
a weird config.

alg = manual
icf/ics = automatic (if ICS or ICF is on)

What McAfee product are you running?

Remove the I394 adaptor and the bridge set tcpip of
localarea adaptor to get ipadress automatically.
ipconfig release and renew or restart machine the connect
and surf

Ken,
Thanks I have reset
alg= manual
icf/ics=automatic

My McCafee firewall is 4.02 and Internet Security:5.03. As I had
mentioned I did not have any problem when connecting from my laptop/desktop
through independently through the router. It is only after my use of the wizard something seems
to have happened. Anyway I have uninstalled firewall and internet security. Still no luck.

Appreciate your reply!
I uninstalled I394. Restarted. Set LAN to obtai
IP automatically. Unchecked ICF. Did a ipconfig /release followed by a ipconfig /renew
I got an error "An error occurred while renewing something that is not a socket
The IP address still showed 169.254.x.y. Also uninstalled my wireless adapter and restarte
just to make sure

In the options tab where there was TCP/IP filtering, I set it as "permit all". Restarted
No luck. Could not browse

It appears that my PPPoE connection is fine. I have valid IP server/client address
It is my LAN connection that does seem to have a dynamically configured addres
which my broadband connection knows of.

I was able to ping the server/client address of my PPPoE. 67.74.x.y & 67.74.x.z. Could pin
169.254.x.y, 127.0.0.

Any suggestions. Is there supposed to be a gateway between my PC and the broadband
I remember I had specified this when using the wizard. Did it set something up which I need to undo
Please help. Marooned :-(

This should fix the "not a socket"

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Go to the network connections folder, right click the icon for your
network connection, and select properties.

4. Click install, choose "protocol", and click "add..."

5. Click "Have Disk...", enter "\windows\inf", click OK

6. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click OK

7. When the process in complete, reboot
