I have somehow lost or accidently threw out the product
code, that is, if I ever actually had it. I have a Dell
that I purchased in Sept 2002 that came with XP
installed. I would like to reinstall XP because I
installed a program that really screwed up my startup,
thing is that it asks for a product code. I did install
SP1 for XP right after I got the Dell but cannot remember
if I had a product code that I entered. I always keep
all the info that comes with a program right in the jewel
case but all I have is the PID number. I know the
product code could be found in the registery on win98 but
I have not been able to locate it in XP.

Dell should have placed stickers on your computer with the
required numbers. There is a Dell support number and the MS
COA sticker. You can call Dell, they keep pretty good
records and should be able to tell you the numbers.

But as long as you have the original hard drive and mobo, it
should install and activate OK when you get the product key.

You can try EVEREST from www.lavalys.com to see the product
key.

Call Dell tech support and talk to them on their 800 number.

If Dell installed it, the number will be on a sticker on the case. Check the
sides, back, top, bottom.

In that case the one to use is on a label stuck somewhere on the outside
of the case. Look for a 25 character string in groups of five. like

BH92S-LBTH6- etc

Note that one given to you by one of the programs mentioned will be the
one used by Dell in setting up an original image from which to copy to
machines: it is *not* correct for your reinstall

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer
affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc
Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the
Product Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and
haven't since reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably
of the drive image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product
Key; therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not
be -- used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
PC; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.
