I have recently purchased a new computer, and was getting ready to install XP
Pro fresh on the new hardware, when I discovered that my XP rego code was
illeible. It's a weekend, and I can't contact Microsoft, so is there
anything I can do to get the code in the meantime?

Yes, go out and purchase a new genuine version of Windows XP.

Your Product Key?
Microsoft wouldn't be able to help you with that either - unless you have
the proof of purchase (and it was a retail version - not OEM.)

If that version is Retail and is still currently installed on some machine
(you cannot transfer an OEM copy (due to EULA restrictions) from one machine
to another... for example - if your product key is on a sticker on your old
machine - that is an OEM copy and you should buy another copy to put on the
new machine) you can use Belarc Advisor or Magic Jellybean KeyFinder to get
the product key you need from the working install.
