Lost XP Login

I have done this 3 times and now I am at a loss of what to do to correct it.
I install XP on my machine and tell it to update from the web and then
install a completely new copy on the drive.

During install I am asked for a computer name, which I give, then later a
username, which I give and I am asked to join a domain or a workgroup. I
elect domain and gain access, setup continues.

When setup is complete it re-boots and I get to the Windows Logon Screen. I
enter the password, it tells me I can't logon, I click options, select the
domain, enter the password and logon to the desktop. Thats all fine.

I can see computers on the network. I can re-boot, log off and log on, etc.
just fine.

Then I go to System properties and to change to a workgroup. I enter the
workgroup name, click OK and it tells me Welcome to the workgroup, then tells
me I have to re-boot for the changes to take effect. I re-boot.

When I get to the Windows Logon screen, I have the same username, etc.
already in the window, I enter the password and it won't let me lonon and to
make sure the username and domain are correct.

I click Options and all it does is remove the shutdown button.

I can't go any farther.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Once a computer is removed from a domain, you can only log on with an
existing local profile username and password. You should have set a default
password for the Administrator account when you installed XP - therefore you
should be able to log on as Administrator with the password you assigned to
that account during Windows XP Setup.

Yes I can log on as Administrator,

But what can I do about the user I created that I can't logon with?
Administrator doesn't even see that user under User Profiles although there
are folder under Docs and Settings.

Is that user lost? Gone forever? What can be done to recover?

The user should be there if you re-join the domain - remember that once you
join a domain the security is provided by the domain, not the local PC.
When you leave the domain the user will no longer appear in the profile
list, instead you'll likely see an entry with a strange name which is the
SID (Security ID) of the account.

If you need to move documents and settings from a domain logon to a local
logon, I'd suggest using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to save the
settings while logged onto the domain, then to re-load them to the local
profile after leaving the domain.

I got my user back, I'll try the transfer wizard.
