My hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced, but I have lost the
original Windows XP cd that came with the Laptop. I have the full code but
how do I get the Laptop up and running again without buying a new operating
system.

Call MS toll-free number and ask about getting a replacement CD. Have your
keycode handy.

This will not work for the OP. The OP stated "original Windows XP cd
that came with the Laptop". This means that the OP should contact the
laptop mftr. for replacement since this is an OEM version and MS will
just refer Tavina back to the OEM.

Tavina - If for some reason you cannot get a replacement from the laptop
mftr., you have three choices:

1. Purchase a full retail copy of XP and install it. Use the Product Key
that comes with the retail copy. Get all drivers and laptop-specific
software from the laptop mftr.'s support website.

2. Purchase a generic OEM copy of XP that matches the version on your
laptop (Home, Pro, Media Center) and install it. Use the Product Key
that is on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Get all drivers and
laptop-specific software from the laptop mftr.'s support website.
Activation will need to be done by telephone.

3. Take the laptop to a local computer professional - not a BigStoreUSA
type of place - where they will do a version of #2 above for you.

I suggest starting with the laptop mftr.

Contact the laptop's manufacturer to obtain a replacement CD.

Look on the bottom or side of the laptop, you just might find a key code
sticker for your OEM copy of XP.

Forgot to mention that if there is a sticker on the laptop then the chances
are it's an OEM copy.

Apologies: I stand corrected. That's correct information.

Just to add to what others have said, If (and thats a big if) your laptop
came with a full version of XP such as older Dell's used to then you can
borrow a friends cd and install it
so long as you use the product ID ( the 25 digit code) that came with your
laptop.
