Lost Word Access

I recently changed ISP's from a dial up to DSL (Verizon)
Somehow I lost the use of outlook contacts in Word - Letter Wizard and
Envelopes and labels. The error is:
Microsoft Office Outlook: Either there is no default mail client or the
current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run
Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client.
I do not want Outlook as the default mail client. I used to use Outlook
Express and did not have this problem. I suspect that when Verison set up my
mail box, I lost the Outlook - Word relationship.
Win XP SP 2, Word 2003 SP1, Outlook 2003 SP1 Thanks Frank C.

Despite your claim, Outlook must be your default mail client to do mail
merges with Word. It has been ever thus.

In Outlook, I went to Tools > Options > Other
The Make Outllok the default program for E-Mail contacts and calandar is
checked.
I also get Logon Failed. You must logon to Microsoft Exchange to access your
address book.
I don't know what Microsoft Exchange is.
I want to continue using Thunderbird as my E-Mail.
Any more help?
THanks

It would appear that you do not have a mail transport configured for
Outlook. You must have one configured because it is those transports that
are used for a mail merge.

Thanks for the reply Russ;
How do I configure a mail transport for Outlook?
Can I do this and still keep my current mail server (Verizon) and Mail
client (Thunderbird)?

Just configure an Internet Mail Account in Outlook.
You can still use another email client.
But Outlook will need to be your default for most of the merge functions
with Word to work.

Thanks Russ:
I followed your instructions and my connection between Outlook Contacts and
Word has been re-established.
Thunderbird still works as the mail client
