Hi all

I'm looking to reformat my parents' computer for them but I can't find their Product Key at the moment. Is there any way that I can find it somewhere on the computer itself

Thanks.

Hi,

When Windows XP is still installed you can use one of many key finders.

ya shoulda wrote it down in a very safe place...like on the DISK...or the PC
chassis.....now that wasn't all that tough was it...

1.. In Windows XP, do one of the following:
a.. Click Start, click My Computer, and then click View system
information.
b.. If your computer is set up in Classic view, click Start, point to
Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
2.. Click the General tab.
You'll find your current Product ID under Registered to.

lost..they just did not know where it is on the PC.

Actually, that is a very poor idea you offered since it is fraudulent!

other ways. BUT YOU MUST HAVE A GOOD ANTIVIRUS running. Too many
viruses now adays.

No, it is NOT fraudulent - *if* it is YOUR license. If you had a tool to
see your license plate number on your car without having to get out of your
house to go physically look at it, that's not fraudulent, either. It's your
car in which the license plate is a part. The product key is part of the
software for which you have a license. Garnering the product key from
someone else's license for use by yourself to circumvent the license is
fraudulent.

Another utility to get the product key is Aida32. The Belarc Advisor will
also show both the Product ID (generated from the Product Key) and the
Product Key. Both are free utilities.

That is the Product ID that is generated *from* the Product Key. The
Product Key is used to install the product. The Product ID cannot be used
to install the product. Perhaps it is possible to reverse hash the Product
ID to get the Product Key but there's no reason to do so since Aida32 and
other utilities will reveal the Product Key for you.

If you want further proof, use Belarc Advisor. It will show you BOTH the
Product ID (generated) and the Product Key, and they are quite different
values.

Ealanta,

Install Aida (free) from <http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php>. It will
extract the Product Key (and other useful information).

Cheers,
Chuck
