Lost the Picture Tasks pane

A neighbor is running XP Pro wit SP2. She wants to show .jpg files using the
slideshow in My Pictures>Picture Tasks.

The problem is that the Picture Tasks pane that is supposed to be at the
left of that of the screen is missing. A search of the knowledge base took
me to KB291257.
This didn't really help. Taking a clue from that article, I removed all the
files from My Pictures and copied them to a flash drive. Then I restarted My
Pictures and copied back a single folder with about a dozen pictures. No
joy.

How can the Picture Tasks pane be restored?

Add Common Tasks.
Click Start, Run - Type:

control folders ( Press {ENTER} key)

Select "Show common tasks in folders"
Click OK.
